This one is going to be very short. Anyone who knows me knows that I love the beach. It feels like home away from home, and I want to do what I can to protect it. Unfortunately I won’t be participating in any beach events this year, but I’ll start up again once it’s safe to do so. This year, World Ocean Day (formerly World Oceans Day) is Tuesday, June 8th. We need the ocean to survive. Ocean currents help to regulate the climate, move warm and cold water, and so much more (NOAA Ocean Exploration, 2021).
So far, I really love Buy Nothing. So many things go to landfill, and for what? In theory, we could keep passing things around until there is really no life left in them: Tables, lamps, chairs, dishes, etc. Buy Nothing groups allow people to donate and help those in their community. I have donated items that I will no longer use/no longer need. Honestly, I would rather it go to someone than to possibly get tossed in the sorting process at a donation center. People have asked for things, like appliances and furniture, and people have gifted when they could. It’s a lovely thing to see people gifting, and to see things not go to landfill. There are several groups, and if one has not been started in your area, you can create one. Be sure to gift safely. Now, more than ever, we need to be diligent in sanitization procedures.
I had kept FFF because, truth be told, it’s fun getting a package in the mail. Is it the most sustainable thing to do? No. But it provided me with a little bit of joy once a quarter. Unfortunately, the boxes have gone downhill. This season, Annual Members were able to choose everything in their box, which I liked. There is a lot of plastic, in terms of product packaging. It’s frustrating because these are all products that work well with my skin. Anything I ended up not using was gifted in my local Buy Nothing group. I’m not sure if the same applied Seasonal Members, but most things sold out right away. I’d been wanting to try PMD’s face cleaner, but realized I have more devices than I could possibly use, so I opted for the towel. I chose things I needed, or would genuinely use, like the sunscreen and ceramic bowls. Unlike previous boxes, there was way less plastic in my box this go around. I can’t help but feel like FFF is going the route of greenwashing with their more “eco-friendly” packaging and product options. There were add-ons that are “sustainable” but, as with many other cases, there is no evidence to back up those claims. Anyway, I’m getting on a tangent.
Today is a beautiful, overcast, cool, windy day. The fog has rolled in a bit, and we can’t see the mountains, that we typically can, from the backyard. Most people prefer bright, sunny weather. While I prefer the heat, I’m a much bigger fan of overcast days than those that are sunny. Today is the kind of day that makes me want to be outside from sun-up to sun-down. Instead, it turned out to be a lazy Sunday.
In part two of Things I No Longer Buy, I’ll be talking about all sorts of things from shaving cream to disposable dishes. This post includes a snippet about “adult” items, although details have been avoided. Is there anything you are hoping to purchase less?
Happy May! As I’ve mentioned numerous times since the pandemic locked us in a bit over a year ago, I have made several purchases that I wouldn’t make under “normal” circumstances. That being said, there are still items that I no longer buy. Why? Sustainability aside, these are items I don’t find value in having. If you do, that’s okay. There is no judgment here. You’ll also noticed it abundance of the word I in this post. That’s because, while I’m low-waste, my fiancé is not. I won’t force my lifestyle on someone else, and simply choose to “live and let live”.
May 1st is tomorrow, which means that my birthday is not far off. I normally spent birthdays getting all of the birthday perks, but as with last year, my day will be spent inside…unless items can be delivered. May also holds some plans, new launches, and the much-anticipated podcast. I’m really excited to get all of these things officially up and running. We’re also thinking of starting streaming (mount farming, old dungeons and raids, new content, etc.), in part, to raise money for various charities. That is a work-in-progress. As soon as we figure everything out, we can go live.
Can you believe that we are almost into May?! There are some exciting things coming up, but I’m not going into detail since I’m waiting on someone else to finish their part first. May also happens to be my birthday month. Anyway, this is more of just a ramble than anything else, as if I were having a discussion with a friend. In the future, I will have a post explaining and listing references for some of the statements, but for now, I’m just going to talk…well, type.
Long story short, the trash jar is total bollocks. There– I said it. Having a jar filled with the year’s waste is trendy; and yes, I had one. I used an old coconut oil jar from a two-pack I bought from Costco. Somewhere, in an older blog most (most likely tied to my first blog) exists a post about it. I thought it would be a good way for me to measure and limit what I was buying. It did just that; however, so did going through my trash at the start of going low-waste. Then I got to thinking about it. What was the point actual of having just a jar? Sure, a trash jar is a conversation piece, but is it actually providing purpose? In my case, it did no more for me than sorting and taking stock in the beginning did. Since I’m not a public speaker, and I don’t go around with the jar of trash everywhere I go, there was really no need to keep it.
Gamers, guilds, and donors have now provided over $600,000 to the Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) event! In doing so, Bananas is now available, for free, to all players. Make sure to read the disclaimers if you have any questions. To claim Bananas, head over to the shop, and he’ll be there with all of the other battle pets. Click him (follow the button) and he will already be unlocked, ready for combat…against other battle pets/masters that is! If you are hoping to see Daisy unlocked, and are able to donate, click here. You can also stream to fundraise if that’s more up your alley. Donations made up to April 26, 2021 11:59pm EST will count towards the goals.
