Valentia: True Glow Eye Cream & Ultra Plumping Hydration Mask

I have been using Valentia’s True Glow Eye Cream twice a day, and their Plumping Hydration Mask once a week for the past 30 days.

Sorry for the flash!
A close-up of the product.

We will start with the hydration mask first.  I am a sucker for a good mask.  There are so many on the market that promise dramatic results, but don’t really deliver on their promises.  I used the plumping hydration mask once a week after my normal cleansing routine.  Texturally the mask is a bit like a pudding/jelly hybrid.  It goes on cool and smells a bit sweet (fruity & floral) and medicinal.  For those who are more sensitive to scents, this may be a bit overpowering.  I left the mask on for 15 minutes, and then rinsed it off with warm water.  My skin felt tighter and was more hydrated after the first use, which was much needed.  The weather since December has been so inconsistent that it’s doing a number to my skin.  I followed up with Valentia’s eye cream, rose serum, another moisturizer (if my skin needed it), and an SPF when I applied the mask in the day.  Since the first use, I have noticed that my skin looks much more “alive” as well as an improvement in its tone.  I have a couple of scars that have lightened up, though I’m not 100% sure if that is due to the mask or not.  At any rate, the mask is a wonderful addition to a night (or day) of relaxation.

The skin around your eyes is very delicate.  It needs to be treated well, and I wish I had started a regimen before.  When I was younger I didn’t care so much about skincare, but these days that decision is catching up with me.  Valentia’s eye cream is a lightweight, non-greasy cream that absorbs fast.  It contains rosehip oil, Vitamin C, and other powerful ingredients that all work together to help brighten the eye area.  I have been using it night and day, and while the dark circles have only slightly improved, the rest of the area feels nourished and less puffy.  The product smells of orange blossom, but is not strong by any means.  At first it was difficult to control the pump.  Product would come flying out of the bottle– the first time it was quite unexpected.  When it happened again, I figured out that I had to press the side of the pump with my thumb to help control the outcome.  It might be better to have the eye cream in a tube.

Have you tried Valentia?  I’d love to know your thoughts.

OZ Naturals: Super Youth Eye Gel

OZ Naturals has some pretty effective products that won’t “break the bank”.  I had a chance to test and review their Super Youth Eye Gel.  It is vegan, cruelty-free, and great for all skin types.  The pump allows to you get as much (or as little) product as you need.  At first I was taken aback because it has an oceanic smell to it.  That is due to the kelp and algae extracts in the product.  The eye gel also contains plant stem cells, peptides, and acid blends.

The gel is opaque,
fast-absorbing, and non-sticky.
The pump allows for
controlled dispensing.

It can take 30 days or longer before results being to really show, so I applied the product day & night for one month.  After my cleansing routine I applied a small amount under each eye and used a dabbing motion to make sure it sunk in.  The product absorbs quickly and stays matte.  I have dark circles under my eyes, so I was excited to finally try out something to help combat them.  Unfortunately, I did not see the results I was hoping for.  The dark circles faded slightly, but not near as much as I had anticipated them to.  There really hasn’t been any cream, gel, or balm that has been very effective.  Dark circles aside, the skin around my eye area has improved.  It is firmer and the puffiness has decreased considerably.  I would recommend you give this product a try.  It may work differently for you than it did for me.

I have tried other products from this brand, and I really like the cleanser.  I use it with my Clarisonic, and my skin is always clean, refreshed, and smooth.

Turmeric & Coconut Oil for Teeth?

So I have been reading a lot about the possible benefits of turmeric and coconut oil on teeth.  I wish there were more studies on the effects of the two on whitening, cavities, and tooth decay, but currently there are very few.  I love the both of them because turmeric is good for digestion (and I’ve been having some GI issues lately) plus fresh turmeric is amazing in everything, and coconut oil is incredibly versatile.  I made a pasty mixture of coconut oil and turmeric to see what the results will be on my teeth.  Instead of replacing real toothpaste for the mix during morning and night brushings I will use the paste at night only, and then follow it with my normal mouthwash (ACT).

Coconut Oil + Turmeric.  Smells great, looks awful.

I am going to try this for 30 days starting tonight, and will post the results at the end of my trial.  What are your thoughts on the use of this for teeth?  Do you have any DIY concoctions?

Period Talk: Pads, Tampons, and the Great Menstrual Cup Debate

Why we don’t talk about something that is a normal process for most bodies is beyond me.  Once a month (give or take depending on your body) the female body goes through menstruation until it ends.  The first time I ever had a period was at my grandparents house.  It is something I will never forget because I was wearing white shorts and it was around Christmas.  Of course, right?  Anyway, I used to have the worst cramps.  I couldn’t take Pamprin or Midol because, to be quite frank, it would make the clotting ten times worse, so I just lived with it.  As I got older the cramps stopped and were replaced with lower back pain throughout the duration of my period and sore breasts the week before.  The sore breasts were a sign that it was approaching, which I guess was a good warning.  Within the last year that has changed, too.  I still have the lower back pain and breast sensitivity, but now the cramps have decided to make a return.  They aren’t that bad, but once in awhile it almost feels like a stabbing pain.

These are a great option, especially
if you have a heavy period.

I have always been a pad user.  I prefer the ultra thin kind, with wings of course.  I used to buy Always, but I’ve found that I prefer the Target brand because they have a better adhesive.  Since my period, as of now, is heavy for the first 2-3 days then very light the rest of the week, I use the overnight extra-long with wings, then switch to the regular pads.  Some of my friends use reusable cloth pads for environmental purposes, but that’s something I’m not quite comfortable with.  Would I try it?  Possibly.

When I was younger there were times when I would use tampons as a protective measure.  They used to make curved tampons.  The applicator was curved for easier use, but they went off the market.  These days you can find them in all sizes, but no longer curved, which helped me a lot.  Due to the risk of TSS, I stopped using tampons altogether.  I also didn’t like the concept of keeping a plug up there.  My best friend recommended that I try a menstrual cup instead.

My first attempt at using a menstrual cup.  About 10 years ago I tried a brand called Instead, now called Softcup.  The experience was anything but pleasant.  It is great in theory, but it was far more uncomfortable than I thought it would be.  It was difficult to insert and even more difficult to tell whether or not it was in correctly.  On top of everything, I could feel it, so I said my goodbyes to menstrual cups.

The cup comes with a travel bag for keeping.

There are so many different cup styles out there that it was difficult to choose one.   After a lot of thought I decided to get the Lena, which looks a lot like the Sckoon Cup.  I purchased the small size, and had high hopes.  There are a few different folding methods, so I tried a couple of different ways, and the easiest for me was the 7-fold.  There were some things I noticed that were repetitive while reading about period cups.  One consistent thing with the cups is that it will feel like it “pops” that indicated it has suctioned to you.  I never felt that.  I made sure that it was completely open by running the tip of my finger around the base.

The first time I used the Lena, I noticed I could feel it– like when you don’t quite have a tampon in all the way.  After some time I realized it was because of the stem.  I ended up having to cut most of it otherwise it would poke out, which one of the most uncomfortable feelings ever.  It took two cycles for my body to really adjust to the cup.  There are days when I don’t feel like using it, but it’s a lifesaver when I travel or have to go out somewhere, especially on heavy days.  No longer do I have to wake up several times a night to change, nor do I have to worry about leaking all over the sheets.  Now, there have been times in the first couple of days where I have had leaks, but that’s simply because the cup fills up, and there’s nowhere else for the blood to go.  That’s a bit graphic but it does happen, which is why I use a liner or regular pad as added security, more so when I am not at home.

I never thought I would be a period cup user.  Some of my friends think it’s really gross, and I was one of those people until I found a cup that worked for me.  The idea that blood literally collects in a cup until it’s dumped out is just as odd as having an absorption plug.  While I still think the blood should just be allowed to flow and expel itself from the body, we aren’t always in situations where we can change pads whenever we please.  The cups are a safer alternative to tampons; they are more environmentally friendly, I don’t have to buy pads as often (which saves money), and they hold more than tampons do.  A big question is:  How do I empty the cup when I’m not at home?  Do it the same way you would at home, except have some wipes on hand.  If I am in a public bathroom that isn’t individual I empty the cup, clean it with a wipe, re-insert, and then clean up my hands with another wipe before leaving the stall.  As always, practice good hygiene by washing your hands after using the bathroom.  Sometimes I
don’t want to go through the hassle of re-inserting it because it can be quite messy.  I always carry extra pads in case that happens.

There is a great app that I use to track my period called My Days.  It is available on the App Store and on Google Play.  You could also just use the calendar, but I really prefer the app.  Mark the day when you start and stop, and it will predict your ovulation, fertility, and your next period.

What do you think?

Downton Abbey Finale

It is hard to believe that Downton Abbey has come to an end.  Tomorrow night the finale will air in the US.  I have already seen it, though, and I must say that it was quite a satisfying ending.  I promise not to include any spoilers.  Just know that loose ends were tied and they filmed in such a way that there could be reunion specials in the future.  By the way, I really hope they do have at least one reunion in the future.  Even though Downton Abbey was not a historical drama, viewers witnessed changes in fashion trends, class systems, women’s rights & women in business, and the toll war takes.  The historians for the program did their best to ensure accuracy.

How often do you find a show where the characters pull you in in such a way that you feel a part of things?  Quite rarely, I’ve found.  When Sybil was killed off, it was the first time I ever cried during a TV program.  Then Dan Stevens left the show, and of course he had to be killed off (in a car crash no less!).  It felt as though I had lost someone, even though that wasn’t the case, and the grief did not last long since the series progressed.  I was excited to see Gwen return for a cameo, and was even happier to see Tom & Sibbie return from The States.  There has been much love and loss at Downton.  Turmoil, togetherness, scandal, and everything in-between presented itself.  The program showed us that, even “great” families have their issues, and that money doesn’t always buy happiness…though it helps.  So much went on during the series.  It makes it tough to discuss just a few moments.

I find it interesting how emotional ties can be made with a TV series, but that must say something about those who make it happen.  You can watch the finale preview below, courtesy of PBS.

Thank you to the creator, cast, and crew of Dowton Abbey for such an amazing ride.

What were you favorite Downton moments?

YSL Touche Eclat Neutralizer

A friend of mine introduced my to YSL’s Touche Eclat complexion highlighter years ago, and I was instantly a fan.  The product is a splurge at $42.00 a pop, but works extremely well.  YSL recently released a line of color neutralizers in violet, green, and bisque ($38.00/each).

I received a neutralizer in green, courtesy of Influenster, to try out.  The creamy, unscented formula is not sticky and will stay put all day.  It is also matte, so no extra oiliness, and it is very lightweight.  A little goes a long way, and my under eye circles and redness nearly disappeared.  You can see how well the product mutes out my skin tone, so imagine that on problem areas.

Sorry for the fingerprints!
I kept cleaning the package, and still…
The tube out of the package.

Click the button at the bottom
to dispense the product.  Be careful!
It’ll come out fast.
That small amount (see photo
above) on the side of my hand.
How much that amount covered, without
really blending.

To dispense the product, click the bottom button of the pen until the desired amount of product comes through the brush.  The pen makes a loud clicking sound, so don’t be alarmed.  You can apply it with the brush, but it might leave brush marks.  I recommend that the product be blended.  To do so, I use either my fingertips or a damp BeautyBlender or micro BeautyBlender.  This product helped to provide the perfect foundation for the rest of my makeup.  Clients tend to love it as well, but it is a pricey item to have in your kit.  Other brands with similar products include, but are not limited to, the following:  SmashboxCover Fx, and NYX.  Since I haven’t tested them out, I can’t say whether or not they work just as well, but they are a few options if you can’t get a hold of YSL.

Whole Foods/Sprouts/Mother’s Market Haul

Since there is a Sprouts, Mother’s Market, Trader Joe’s, and (now) a Whole Foods within about a 3-mile span, I decided to hit up just about all of them.  The only reason I didn’t go to Trader Joe’s is because I was just there.

So Whole Foods finally opened up near me, and I must say that I was ecstatic.   They have recently been in some pretty hot water, but they offer things other markets don’t.   Yes, it can be pricey.  You just have to know what you want and how much other places charge.   Anyway, I’ve been having some GI issues, so there are things I’ve been cutting out to see if it makes a difference.   There hasn’t been a change, but I’ve fallen in love with some alternative food products, so I continue to get them.  This Whole Foods is located in a new center at the corner of Valencia and Imperial Hwy.  The shopping center looks like they pulled it out of Newport Beach.  It’s beautiful, with several shops and dining establishments.  They are putting in a Mendocino Farms, which is exciting.  They have a great selection of sandwiches & salads for everyone– you can view their menu here.

It took nearly 10 minutes to find parking!  Of course, I went on a Saturday, but I didn’t think the entire lot would be full.  Eventually a space opened up, and I headed in.  This location is beautiful…and packed.  But of course it is; it’s Whole Foods.  This 38,000 square-foot location has two entrances; the side I entered on greeted me with produce, bulk items, and the seafood department.  I started on that side since I wanted to end with the salad bar.  I wanted to check out the other food stand options, but there were too many people.  Perhaps this week; hopefully a week day morning/early afternoon won’t be as crowded.  The staff is friendly and more than willing to help out the customers.  I wasn’t able to get a picture of the front, so here is the logo:

Due to the crowds I wasn’t able to take as many photos as I would have liked.  Maybe on the next trip there will be more opportunities for photos.  Now, onto the purchases.

Tried to capture everything…
Refrigerated & frozen goods.

This time I remembered to bring a small cooler.  Whole Foods had some of my favorite things on sale!

Belgian chocolate milk & my
favorite Argo tea (there were two)

My partner really loves this chocolate milk.  It is made with Belgian chocolate, and is far better than any other pre-made chocolate milk brands.  They used to sell it at Fresh & Easy, and we didn’t know who else would sell it.  While at Sprouts, I just happened to look up while looking for almond milk, and this was “staring me in the face”.  Argo tea was on sale at Whole Foods (2 for $4.00), and I love the Mojitea.  Anything with mint in it is amazing.

My favorite brand of meat alternatives.

Also at Whole Foods were Gardein meat alternatives.  They are rarely on sale, so when I saw that they were 2 for $7.00, I got a couple of items I hadn’t tried.  When I got home I sampled both.  I love the flavor of the meatless balls; the fennel seeds really come through, which gives them more of an Italian sausage flavor.  The texture is similar to a mushier meatball.  I cooked the beefless tips in a sauce of garlic, soy sauce, red pepper, and sugar.  They were awesome, but if you overcook them they will be dry & tough.

I LOVE Field Roast products.

In case you don’t know, I LOVE Field Roast.  Chao is my favorite dairy cheese alternative.  You can read more about my first Chao experience here.  I have been wanting to try their deli slices.  In the Whole Foods refrigerated section there is a case dedicated to dairy cheese and meat alternatives.  I grabbed the two I could see (Smoked Tomato and Wild Mushroom).  I didn’t see the Lentil Sage flavor, but if I do I will be trying it as well.  I haven’t had an opportunity to test them out because I have the endoscopy today and have been on a liquid diet.  I did try the Apple Maple Sausage.  The flavor was good– similar to a light breakfast sausage, but the texture was less than desirable.  They are very mushy even when browned in a pan.  I might try frying them to see if the outside will crisp up.  Since they are not real meat, don’t expect it to have the juiciness of an actual sausage.  I really want to try them in a scramble or breakfast bowl because I love the flavor.

Anything with fennel is something I’m willing to try.

While looking for the Gardein products in Whole Foods, I saw these Italian fennel patties by Engine 2.  They are meat-free, and contain the following:  Cooked brown rice, garbanzo beans, spinach, caramelized onion, red quinoa, roasted garlic puree, sundried tomatoes, fennel, ground flaxseed, toasted fennel seeds, thyme, sage, black pepper (list courtesy of wholefoods.com).  I can’t wait to try these!  They will be great as wither a burger or on its own…maybe with some scrambled eggs, or crumbled in a sauce.

I found this at Mother’s Market for $10.95
The product out of the container.

I have been reading about the cheese alternatives from Miyoko’s Creamery, and since they have been highly received, I wanted to give them a try.  I chose to purchase one because of the price.  They had the Smokehouse, Rustic Alpine, and Black Ash.  I bought and tried the Black Ash.  The product tastes good, but I wish it wasn’t coated in ash.  The gritty ash is not texturally pleasing given the creaminess of the wheel.  It is tangy and sharp, much like Laughing Cow, with a slightly sweet finish.  Black ash is slightly firmer than Brie.  If it were to sit out, it could be soft enough to spread on a cracker.  I could see this going into a Mac & not-Cheese dish, or having it paired with dried fruit.  I may end up washing the ash off because it felt like my teeth were biting into sand.  I would be willing to try other flavors, but not necessarily at those prices.
I bought most of the dry goods at Sprouts.
In the left column we have some salt and vinegar almonds as well as some Tamari almonds.  Almonds are amazing!  While these probably aren’t the best snack option, I had to try the salt and vinegar…I haven’t yet…but I will.  I have had Tamari almonds, and prefer them to the roasted/salted option.  Adding them to salads and snack packs gives a nice crunch and a hit of flavor.  Next to the almonds are raw cashews and quinoa (from Mother’s Market).  Luckily the cashews were on sale at Sprouts, and the quinoa from Mother’s was far cheaper in bulk ($5.95/lb, I think).  In the thrid column there are red lentils, dried blueberries and dried cherries.  I am going to try and make a fruit bar, or maybe a fruit & chia seed bar, so I’ll let you know how it goes.  If they turn out I will post a recipe.

The best cheddar cracker sandwiches in my opinion!

I never thought that something could be better than Ritz, but I was wrong.  My partner and I purchased these when Fresh & Easy was going out of business.  The crackers are a wee bit saltier than Ritz, but they taste amazing!  I’m not sure what is in them that makes these crackers so good.  I tried the peanut butter cracker sandwiches, but they aren’t as good as the cheddar.  They, too, were on sale, which is why I bought two.  They go fast!  If you see them in the smaller packs give them a try, and let me know how you like them.

The Chimes were from Mother’s, but the
others were bought at Sprouts.

It’s always nice to find things that are travel-friendly.  Peanut butter Chimes are my favorite of their flavors.  Creamy peanut butter meets slightly spicy ginger in a chew that doesn’t stop at one.  Not for me, anyway.  I also got the but butter packs to try out the product without having to buy an entire jar.  Is it cheaper?  No, but it’s better than being stuck with a whole jar of a product you don’t care for.

It’s nice to have salt alternative options.

The first time I had anything with liquid amino acids was at my best friend’s house.  She used it in place of salt, and I loved it!  I purchased a small bottle at Whole Foods and will start trying it out when I can.  Nothing is as good as the real thing, but you can use this in place of shoyu (soy sauce).  Not that I plan on that, but it might go well in onigiri (rice ball) or onigirazu (rice ball sandwich).  When I have some recipes I will post them.  Do you cook with liquid aminos?

They also had a white cheddar option,
but I went for yellow cheddar

I have been flip-flopping on whether or not to purchase this.  I really like Velveeta and Kraft (I know, I know), but wanted to give this a try.  Since I’m cutting down on a lot of dairy because my GI isn’t always happy after it’s been consumed, I am hoping that this is a nice alternative to mac & cheese.

Artisanal LA, Spring 2016 (to be updated)

Very few things in life get me excited.  Artisanal LA is one of those things.  It is a really fun event with local, small business vendors selling their wares.  My best friend and I went to their holiday show (read more about that here), and it was a blast!  We are going again in April, so this post will be updated with all the happenings at the show.  I will have to remember to take an ice chest with me.  You never know what you’re going to find!  What are you most looking forward to seeing?

#APDays at Disneyland

The four themes for #APDays
This year the Disneyland Resort is doing something just for Annual Passholders (APs) during the month of February.  During each themed week there are AP-only activities, showings, and AP-exclusive gifts that are being offered.  Recipes cards are being distributed throughout the weeks that include some famous recipes, such as Walt’s Chili & Beans, that is served at the Carnation Cafe.  There are also charging stations, which is a wonderful offering, since phones always tend to run out of battery at the worst time.

Complimentary popcorn and mini water bottles are both offered inside Stage 17.  There are three flavors to choose from:  White Cheddar, Cheese, and Butter.  Personally, the White Cheddar is my favorite.

The first week’s theme was Main Street to Mickey Mouse.  Jiminy Cricket made an appearance at Stage 17, and APs were able to take photos with Pinocchio’s very own conscience.  We walked around Disneyland and got wristbands for the show at the Opera House.  After that we were off to DCA for complimentary water and popcorn.

Photo backdrop for the first week inside Stage 17.

This guide included fun facts about Main Street U.S.A.

There are activities & charging stations
inside the Blue Sky Cellar.

The second week’s theme was Live the Adventure.  Along with recipe cards and the button were showings of hand-selected episodes of Walt Disney discussing what makes Disneyland tick.  Walt took us on a tour of Frontierland and what attractions were in the works at the time.  They also gave everyone a pamphlet (not pictured) with a mystery phrase on the back.  Photos were the key to solving the puzzle.

The photo-op backdrop changes for each themed week.

Baloo & King Louie made an appearance.

A nice place to charge up your devices.
This mac & cheese hot dog on
Main Street was pretty good, but the
bun was the worst!

Week three was Fantasy and Fun, where everyone was invited to dress in his/her favorite character theme.  Costumes were not allowed except for young children, but there were ideas for other characters.  Polka dots for Minne, a vest and turtle neck for Goofy, or overalls & a bow-tie for Roger Rabbit (one of my favorite characters)…anything is possible with a little imagination.

I wonder what character will
be doing the Meet & Greet…
ROGER RABBIT!  One of
my favorite characters.

This week is the final week of AP Days, and is appropriately themed A World of Tomorrow.  We never truly know what the future holds.  Imagination & positivity make this continuum called life a much happier event.  Even though there are always going to be issues in the world, there is a small beacon of hope at the end of it, that everything will be okay,  Utopia may never be achieved, but stepping into Disneyland makes it seem as though anything is possible.  As Walt once said, “Disneyland will never be completed.  It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world.”  I will update this post with photos as soon as I get down to the park.

A Little Chocolate Haul

Chuao is one of my favorite brands.  At one time there was a shop near me, but it has since closed.  My dad was the one to tell me about it, so every time we went to the Irvine Spectrum, I would grab a strawberry balsamic bonbon (or two) as well as something different.  On a side note, if you have a positive relationship with your parents, you are never too old to hang out with them.  I have great memories associated with this wonderful brand.  Anyway, this is the first online order I placed with them, and it did not go quite as I had planned.

My order consisted of two 16-piece bonbon/truffle custom boxes, one 5-piece custom box, two Share the Love gift sets, four S’Mores bars and one Caramel Apple bar.  There were some great promotions happening, so I got some things for my friends in Australia and some things for my household.  After placing the order I assumed it would be shipped within a couple of days (giving extra time because of the holidays).  I was contacted at the end of the week that the items would be shipped that coming Tuesday.  Since the weather had been in the 90s they didn’t want the items to melt if they were left out.  That was fine– I’d prefer the products to come in their intended form, even though you can’t always control for that.  My box shipped Wednesday, and the box was in my hands by Thursday.  Everything arrived in perfect condition– not a thing melted (granted, it ended up being cold and rainy).  Originally I wasn’t going to open all of the boxes, but then had second thoughts because…well, you never know.  Needless to say I’m glad I did.

I had custom ordered bonbons because Modena, now Strawberry Seduction, is one of my favorites.  Dark chocolate envelops a sweet and tangy strawberry balsamic caramel resulting in a perfectly balanced bite (bottom right in the image).  That arrived, as did the other bonbon/truffle boxes that contained a mix of dairy, non-dairy, dark chocolate, and milk chocolate pieces and the individual bars.  I opened the other two boxes to make sure that the Share the Love gift sets were there.  One was, but the other wasn’t.  Instead, one was a Milk Chocolate Bar set.  I wrote to the company to let them know, and they are shipping out the correct item on Monday.  The customer service (chocolate concierge as they call it) representatives I had been in contact with were wonderful.

So many boxes!!…of love & chocolate.
…and the dark box as well.

As you can see, we sampled
the milk chocolate box…
This is the set they sent instead of
the second Share the Love.

You may be wondering what the point of this story is.  Chuao is not only one of my favorite brands because of the wonderfully flavorful chocolates; they are also my favorite brand because of their customer service.  Yes, they did ship the wrong product, but they are also correcting the situation, and could not have been nicer about it.

To make a custom order, all you need to do is place an order, then email the chocolate concierge so they can make adjustments.  If you are interested in purchasing the items I did, here are the pictures, prices, flavor profiles, and items included (all lists & images courtesy of chuaochocolatier.com).  Each bonbon/truffle set comes in 5-piece, 9-piece, or 16-piece boxes.
