Zero-Waste Repetition and Moving Forward

Those of you who have been here awhile know that, while I’m far from perfect, I try to live as low-waste and sustainably as possible within the confines of my situation. This blog has, in part, chronicled that journey. Unfortunately, part of a new adventure I’m embarking on challenges that, but we are working towards a more low-waste and sustainable future. If you are interested in reading more about the direction this blog is taking, and then some, click below.

When I first started this blog it had a different name and drastically different content. As my lifestyle has changed, so has this blog. After a short transition, I went from hauls and subscription boxes to suggesting low-waste/sustainable options for just about everything. That being said, it’s important to reiterate that many options aren’t available to everyone, and they’re often costly upfront. Living more sustainably is a privilege. I’ve also brought in other aspects of my personal life such as health and wellness. If we can get some video content up, which we haven’t had much time to work on, we’re hoping to be able to give you a glimpse into our daily lives. So, what can you expect to find here moving forward?

From Zero-Waste to Sustainability

There is a focus on “zero-waste” in terms of the trash that one purchases (yes, every time you buy something with any sort of packaging it is money going in the trash), how it’s sided of, and less of a focus on all of the resources to create that one item. Since zero-waste has become synonymous with sustainable living practices, which encompasses far more than just packaging and plastics, I want to make sure that those posts are distinctly separate. Zero-waste content isn’t disappearing completely. What will happen is that it will get its own space. There will be a new area surrounding the many facets of sustainability that extends beyond the surface. For example, let’s take a look at a bottle of water. In order for that bottle to be on the shelf, water has to be pulled from some source. Then, there are the resources for packaging (including the ink for labels), emissions, the environmental impact of taking that water from its source, the bottle’s end of life and what will happen as it breaks down, etc. With all of these things to consider, do you ever notice that the one thing talked about the most is the plastic bottle itself and the focus on the consumer to “do better”? We have to start looking at the entire picture and hold corporations accountable.

Conscious Consuming

You’ll find content on living sustainably (a lifestyle from which I’m far from perfect) and conscious buying from a multi-faceted perspective, instead of simply discussing low-waste/package-free products. Admittedly, not every post will go into great depth, but I’ll do my best. Regarding food, since the pandemic, I’ve purchased more packaged items than I have in awhile. Options are limited, we make do with what’s available. We are also on a tight budget that also impacts what we buy.

Fashion

I’m also clearing out a good portion of my closet to make room for vintage and antique pieces from the 1920s-1930s. I’ll donate the items that don’t become part of a quilt. As for the scraps, they will be repurposed to fill some pillow cases we have. There may be some ’40s and ’50s items added to the curated collection but my fashion favorites (minus the hats) come from about the mid 1920s to the late 1930s. Drop waists and looser fits are more comfortable to me than form-fitting attire. I may tie this into a post about fast-fashion and how I’m much more conscious about the clothes I purchase. It’s amazing that some of my favorite clothing pieces ever are 90-100 years old! They look amazing for their age. Now to find wearable shoes to go with them…

Gaming Content

I’ll have some gaming content for you when I get a chance to stream. At some point I’ll do some research on the sustainability of gaming, but right now, there aren’t enough hours in the day. It’s one thing that I enjoy and it keeps me relatively relaxed. I’m rather bummed that I didn’t capture the moment I bought the giant cactus mount in FFXIV. That was my goal, as far as mounts go, in the game–it was a momentous day. There are other games I play and would like to get a live stream up and going even if it’s only once a week.

More

It looks like that’s all for now. I’m sure there are some things I’ve forgotten, so this post will be updated when I come across anything. Coming up, we have some ideas for Valentine’s Day, whether you’re celebrating with someone or flying solo. We also have some spring-inspired recipes, low-waste staples, and more in the upcoming weeks.

Peace & Love, always!
