I have spent the last few days decluttering. I have a game plan for further decluttering, but it might have to wait until after the weather cools down. Anyway, not only did I work on decluttering the just in case items, unused skincare and makeup (luckily I was able to gift them), but the plastic containers as well. We always kept them, mostly for leftovers or sending food home with others. Since switching to glass and stainless steel, I don’t have a need for the other containers. Even though it is better to continue to use what you have, we simply have too many. After gifting some of the plastic containers we recycled the rest. Since there are still things, like plant butters, that we purchase in plastic (they only come in plastic tubs), it’s not like we don’t run across food containers again.
Electronics, cords, and reusable bottles aside, there isn’t much left that’s in plastic. There are some items that we have for the shop that are plastic, but I do my best to minimize that. Since we ship glass, we use bubble wrap to ensure safe arrival. That being said, when we run out, we will replace the plastic with a more eco-friendly and budget-friendly option.
I get asked often whether or not my fiancé is low-waste. Short answer: No. Even though it is my lifestyle, I never push it on anyone else. Why? You’re met with much more resistance than if you just lived your life and set the example. Now, I buy things in packaging as well, but do my best to buy packaging that is recyclable. Many see it as a cop-out to buy what I want, and that’s not altogether true. Oh sure, I buy things I like that happen to come in packaging, but I also mostly buy them on sale before they get thrown out. I may be low-waste, but I’m also anti-food-waste.
What have you been doing this Plastic-Free July? Hopefully you are staying safe, happy, and productive.
Peace & Love, always!
