Plastic-Free July: Day 21, Period Talk 🩸

I really wish that bodily functions were talked about more. That being said, this is going to be all about periods, so if it’s not your thing, check out some of my other posts. My personal experience will be discussed, as well as how I have a less crappy period. It’s a long one, so buckle up! You’re in for a bit of a read. Disclaimer: It is vital that I state that this post is for informational and entertainment purposes only. The opinions in this post are my own. Information in this article is not meant to treat, diagnose, nor provide medical advice. If you have any questions, consult your physician.

I remember getting my period for the first time, and when we were shopping for period products, my mom picked out the very thick “normal” pads. I honestly can’t remember the first time we bought tampons, but I hardly ever used them. When ultra thin pads came out, I wanted to try them, and my mom initially refused to purchase them because they “wouldn’t work”. Well, maybe for her, but every body is different. My period was a bit easier to handle once I had the products right for my body. Curved tampons on occasion, but at the time I was nearly 100% using pads. When the Instead® (now Softdisc™) came out, she bought them. I tried them, and it was the worst thing I had ever tried. Long story short, I have tried nearly every period product out there. When I started reacting to typical period products (This may be TMI, but I’ll tell you anyway. My labia minor would swell so bad that I couldn’t walk) I started to use reusables.

My best friend recommended that I try a period cup, and I was against it for the longest time. The whole concept disgusted me. Mind you, the first couple of days are so heavy that I would have to change an overnight absorbency ultra thin pad every 15-30 minutes. With a period cup I only have to empty it every 4-5 hours the first two days and 12 the rest of my period. *I do get ovarian cysts, which affects my period. Every person will have different factors affecting their period, so this may not be your experience.

It took some trial and error, but I finally found a cup that I loved. I had to cut the stem, and that’s okay. Everyone loves the DivaCup. I tried it, and it does work. Unfortunately it is quite long (both sizes are too long for me), so the base of it (with the stem cut) sits right at the vaginal opening, and is very uncomfortable. It can be messy if the cup gets full. I recommend having a wet towelette just in case, even though they’re not the most eco-friendly. The wipes help when you are in a stall situation.

I have also switched to using washable/reusable liners. There is one brand of disposable liners that I purchase that are chemical-free. It is one of two brands that I don’t react to. Washing reusable pads can be a bit of a pain. Since I don’t use them as anything other than liners, there isn’t much on them. That being said, if you do, you will want to soak them before putting them in the wash. Some things I hear all the time is that silicone period cups and reusable pads/liners won’t stain. They will over time, so don’t worry if yours do. Also, be sure to boil your period cups. I like to boil mine at the start of my period and after my period ends. What else? Oh, when it comes to the pads/liners, they will shift when you move. Is there anything you can do about it? Aside from wearing undies that are a bit tighter fitting, there is nothing you can do. A wet bag makes transporting soiled reusables easy, and it should trap odors (not a guarantee). Finally, be patient, take your time, don’t get frustrated, know it may take a few brands before you find your perfect fit, consult your doctor/OBGYN if you have any questions or concerns, and always purchase quality products. Just a note: It may cost more.

I would love to try period undies, although the idea of sitting in blood doesn’t quite appeal to me. I would use them in place of the liners I have, since they shift so much. What are your plastic-free period favorites?

Peace & Love, always!
