This post is not about recycling less, but doing the best with the resources at your disposal. Recycling is something that is avoided as much as possible in being zero-waste, which I’m not anymore. There are misconceptions about recycling, and it is almost vilified, but it shouldn’t be. The type of recycling that is offered is dependent on your area. Where we live, we are fortunate that most plastics are accepted. When it comes to recycling, it is so important know what your waste management accepts. When an item is not accepted, it goes into the landfill. By doing some research, you may be surprised by what you can’t, and can, recycle. If you buy items in plastic, see if the packaging can be repurposed (coming in a later post) or recycled instead of assuming it can’t and toss it in the trash.
We are on the fifth day of Plastic-Free July. You may feel like what you are doing isn’t enough. There are so many influences outside of ourselves as well as an abundance of judgment from friends, family, online groups, etc. can all affect your own outlook. It’s easy to say that you shouldn’t let society influence you and what you’re doing during Plastic-Free July (or at any time), but the truth is, we do. Whether it is on a large or small scale, we let it get to us. Conversely, if we set the example, then positive changes may stem from it. By the way, life is too short to let those people get to you.
Now, don’t beat yourself up if you can’t make plastic-free purchases, or are finding it difficult to cut down on your accumulation of plastics. It is okay! Nobody is perfect; everyone is in a different situation. Simply see what you are capable of doing. Plastic waste extends beyond our ability to recycle or repurpose packaging. What we don’t often see is the plastic waste (and “normal” waste) from the companies that provide everyday products. Just because we get something package-free doesn’t mean that’s how it originally came. I would love if all companies posted their recycling and trash habits, as well as their other practices regarding sustainability.
Peace & Love, always!
