Plastic-Free July: Days 17-18, Reset

Over the past couple of days I have purchased more things in plastic than I planned. I went to a grocery store that I only get to once or twice a year, and practically everything comes in plastic. Side note: Nearly all of the items are imported. I wish they used an alternative, but they don’t. Luckily I am able to recycle the bulk of the packaging, giving an extension to the life of the waste I’ve purchased.

Right now, with more closures happening where we live, it can be easy to get far more than we need. Stocking up for a couple of weeks to a month is one thing, but stocking up for the year on a regular basis is another. Signs have been posted up, as they were in the beginning, with how much of each type of product people can buy. We are reverting back. Anyway, now that I’ve been, and will be set for awhile with dry goods and other food that won’t spoil, it is time to reset. I have taken inventory of the food that I have so I don’t overbuy. Due to the times we’re living in, I’m a bit more lenient on what I’m purchasing in plastic because there aren’t unpackaged options. Overall, we are just doing the best we can.

Taking the time to do a brief inventory (I don’t have time to list things in great detail) helps me to stay on track. It may sound a bit odd, but we try to ration out our food, mostly the dry goods, so we have enough to get us through times where we can’t stock up. We plan ahead, but not much further than a month. Panic buying leads to more food waste if the goods purchased are not used, and it takes food away from others who will need it. I’m beginning to ramble, so I’ll leave you for now. Thanks for listening!

How are you doing with Plastic-Free July so far?

Peace & Love, always!
